In NYC, every nook and cranny should be utilized! As soon as you walk into this apartment, you're smacked in the face with a long and narrow hallway to your left and the only bathroom directly in front of you. Where do you drop your keys? The mail? Your purse? We hate shoes piling up on the floor more than anything, so we knew we had to come up with something creative. We had a 14" x 12" corner full of valuable real estate, but we knew we couldn't just install boring floating shelves or shop forever for a perfectly-sized, expensive piece of furniture. Reclaimed wood, old spindles, and plumbing fittings and piping would do just the trick. We created a tall corner unit with 5 shelves--perfect for catching those small everyday items that can otherwise make your entryway look cluttered.

DIY Tray to Boot!

With the winter looming over NYC I needed to whip my entryway into shape. While shopping online and googling "Boot Tray" I wondered, like I often do, if I could just make one on the cheap. To make matters more challenging, most of my tools were on site at a client project so I really had to think creatively. I have a huge pile of scrap wood in my postage stamp NYC backyard for projects just like this! I broke down a pallet of wood, picked up a few things from my local hardware store, spent about $20 bucks, and had a great boot tray just in time for wet boots to thaw out on.

We built this house in1992. The front closet never really worked . So after several failed attempts using closet organizer and still having coats on the kitchen chairs . I said that it I'm tearing it out. The doors were never closed , so why keep them. I removed the bifold doors and will save them for another project. The headboard was from a client that was downsizing . I raised it up several boards till I got it where I wanted it . I was doing this on my own and the headboard is solid wood. I located wall studs and screwed it directly to the wall. I found this coffee table at goodwill and new it would make a great bench I purchased the valance that matched the curtains in the room to hide the shelf , painted the headboard and added the coat hooks I painted the coffee table with leftover chalk paint and covered the coffee table , now bench with coordinated Waverly fabric. There was space on both sides so I used the extra fabric to cover 2 small folding tables I already had Here is the finished product.

Here's how we transformed our entryway into a fully functional mudroom.If your home has no entryway organization then you know it’s extremely hard to keep clean. That was the case with us. Home from school and shoes are where?! Center of the living room of course! ? It’s not that we didn’t have a shoe rack at all. We did, (photo above shows before makeover) it just wasn’t very pretty and hardly makes you want to organize your shoes on it. Before starting on our little corner makeover I was debating between two styles for the shoe organization part of our mudroom. First I was thinking to go with something very simple. Just a plain shelf with squares to insert your shoes into. Unfortunately my better half wasn’t a big fan of that idea. I knew that whatever I ended up with I wanted it to be very minimalist. So we’re talking lots or whites and natural textures. Oh gosh yes those tile floors are hideous. (photo below) I’ve been so tempted to paint them… I’ve painted laminate floors before but, I haven’t tried tile yet. Anyone try painting tile?

Laundry Closet to Mudroom for $24

German houses have water closets and laundry closets but not storage closets. Tackling loads of golf, soccer, winter and school gear from my twin teenage boys is a struggle. We picked up a set of used lockers for $9 and created a functional space in the entry. The lockers left a space on the side and I wanted a place to store brooms and mops on this level. My husband framed out the lockers and built a door using wood and stain we had on hand. We cut through the back of one of the lockers to expose an outlet and this is where our boys charge their phones. We're really happy with the results and only spent $24.00.

Mobile Coat Closet for Under $60

Here in NYC closets are scarce! Most apartment dwellers will invest in some wall hooks to mount in the entryway, and that's usually enough storage for whoever lives there, but what if you're throwing a party? With the holidays just around the corner, you might be thinking of party logistics if you live in a small space. That's exactly what one of my organizing clients was pondering. She wants to throw a Halloween party, but not only does she not have an entryway, but she also does not have a coat closet nearby to catch jackets, etc. We searched online for mobile coat racks, but most of them lacked shoe or purse storage, and if we wanted to stay under $100 we were forced to buy something boring. Furthermore, we wondered how we would store a mobile coat rack when she wasn't using it - most of them don't come apart. Like with most of my space saving solutions, I go to plumbing piping and fixtures. For just under $60, we were able to create something custom that allowed for shoe and bag storage for her guests by putting an old plank of wood on wheels and then attaching a flange to the wood with piping to hang coats on. This project was so quick and simple and it solved all of my client's problems! When it isn't in use, just unscrew the pipes from the flange and roll it under the bed!

From Decorative Basket to Useful Organizing Tool

A few years ago I received this decorative basket containing bath products. I love containers and often use them for other than what they were originally intended. This basket made me think of a pegboard or hanging grid. So with the help of a picture hanging kit from the dollar store I put it to work for me.

Repurposed Salvage Mailbox

Welcome back to another edition of Flea Market Friday! I’m still working on flipping the items I showed you that I brought back from SNAP. Today I took the comments you left on the post showing you the stuff I brought back from SNAP, and used them in my flip. You all had some great ideas! So I decided to do a reader repurpose on the mailbox. I took the “paint it red” idea from Karen (@Somewhat Quirky Design) and Lisa (@Concord Cottage). Then I took the idea from Kirby (@Kirb Appeal) and added a license plate. I didn’t use the Utah plate because I decided to go with a Texas theme after I painted it red. You know Deep In The Heart of Texas. Nothing like a little vintage TX farming love for me. Here is how this little diamond in the rough turned out.

Streamlining our Entryway

We built this entryway system out of two tall vertical shelves and added a plywood bench seat, some wainscott and hooks to complete. It wasn't meeting up to it's capabilities so a few minor additions seriously increased our entryway storage and organization.

I wish we had a mudroom right off our garage but we don't so I decided to get creative and make my own! The area by the door leading into the house was the perfect spot for my new mudroom! The first thing I did was de-clutter and clean.
